DURALEX, ICONIC FRENCH GLASS ART

Duralex has a rich history as one of the leading specialists in the design and production of tempered glass tableware. From it’s company beginnings in 1945, and now more than ever, Duralex is synonymous with toughness, innovative design and everyday practicality. more

The adventure began in France, in the 1930s. Saint-Gobain took over La-Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin factory, near Orleans that was formerly owned by a vinegar maker and later by a perfumer that produced their bottles there. A few years later, Saint-Gobain, a pioneer in the tempered glass technology, made its first attempts at adapting the process to the tableware production. In 1945, the Duralex brand was registered to specialise in glass amber dinnerware, mugs, bowls and latte glasses.

At the turn of the 21st century Duralex invested substantial resources to further develop their production equipment and bolster the companies market approach, including the establishment of sustainable management systems all whilst making sure products continue to be proudly made in france.

The Duralex brand is embodied in products that have become legendary in the history of design. Duralex is one of those brands that inevitably conjures memories of happy times. Its reputation is based on the very qualities of its product and its unique material, tempered glass, whose strength inspired the brand name itself … from the Latin motto, “Dura Lex Sed Lex” (The law is tough, but it is the law).

The first tableware item sold by Duralex, the Gigogne tumbler, was launched in 1946. In just a few decades, it seamlessly passed from school canteens to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, which paid it a fitting tribute in the “Éditer Design” exhibition in 2007. It most famously has been featured at the MoMA Store, New York’s famous Museum of Modern Art.
To this day popularised designs like Picardie glasses feature in cafes and restaurants all across Australia. As a leader in tempered glass production, Duralex, makes one of the most robust, trustworthy products on offer for all hospitality providers.
